History

In 1888, a town known as Booran was surveyed following the construction of the South Coast railway line. The name Woodridge is derived from an informal name given to a property owned by Octavius Stubbs. When the Railway Department opened a platform to the public in early 1917 they selected Woodridge for the station name and later that year the name was recognised by the post office. Like a number of other Logan City suburbs Woodridge was once part of the Shire of Tingalpa.

In the 2011 census, Woodridge recorded a population of 12,787 people, 50.5% female and 49.5% male. The median age of the Woodridge population was 30 years, 7 years below the Australian median. 54% of people living in Woodridge were born in Australia. The other top responses for country of birth were New Zealand 9.1%, England 2.6%, Samoa 2.1%, Burma 1.6%, India 1.5%. 62.8% of people spoke only English at home; the next most common languages were 4.3% Samoan, 1.7% Arabic, 1.2% Hindi, 1.1% Karen, 1.1% Tongan.

Among educational institutions is St Paul's Primary School, a Catholic school which was opened in 1969. A public high school named Woodridge State High School opened in 1972 and will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary in 2017.

Profile

Logan Shire's, Woodridge, provides opportunities for first home buyers and young families to enter the property market. Many of the homes in Woodridge were built around the 1960s and 70s and thus are fairly basic in design. Such modest homes though make them not only affordable but also ripe for renovation. Nearby Logan Central offers a shopping centre and high school, while Meadowbrook has the Logan Hospital as well as the campuses of Logan TAFE and Griffith University. Woodridge itself has schools and parkland facilities, along with a railway station, which provides access to the Brisbane CBD and to the Gold Coast. Woodridge also offers good access to the Logan and Pacific Motorways. The Logan Entertainment Centre hosts cultural activities throughout the year while the Logan Gardens at the Civic Central Park is also a popular spot. Every Sunday morning, the Logan Central Market comes alive with products such as clothing, electrical goods, and fresh produce on offer.
